Meeting for a World Social Alternative Kicks Off in Caracas

During this event, teleSUR President warned that hegemonic media will try to undermine the electoral results in Venezuela.
From Tuesday to Wednesday, Caracas will host the “Meeting for a World Social Alternative,” an event organized by the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP).

In the session titled “Communication and Resistance,” teleSUR President Patricia Villegas, Brazilian journalist Vivian Fernandez, and Cuban journalist Darion Roque presented their analyses and proposals on contemporary communication processes.
“The 19th anniversary of the founding of teleSUR comes amid intense workdays due to the Venezuelan presidential elections. The political situation requires us to tell the truth about Venezuela in response to transnational media’s narratives distorting the reality of this South American country,” Villegas said.
The teleSUR president then denounced an ongoing plan to undermine the Venezuelans’ will by spreading narratives about an electoral fraud. She recalled that early electoral results are not allowed in Venezuela as no exit polls are conducted. Therefore, the electoral authority’s official results must be awaited.
“Everything else is outside the law. However, hegemonic media, social networks, and news agencies will try to undermine the electoral results,” Villegas warned, urging journalists to fight the dominant narrative.
“Our participation must be notable. We can fracture the hegemonic narrative,” Villegas said, calling for more coordinated work.
For his part, Cuban communicator Dayron Roque highlighted that major communication corporations have been trying to appropriate the concept of “resistance” to serve the reproduction of capitalism.
As demonstrated by the political campaign that led far-right politician Javier Milei to the Argentine presidency, current conservative narratives seek to resemantize collective meanings about evil, injustice, femininity, or poverty.
